Umanesimo digitale. I frammenti in-discorso con il tutto digital Umanesimo digitale - I frammenti in-discorso con il tutto
Anno: 2024
Abstract: A trend intrinsic to digitization is the emphasis on the fragments seen apart from the whole. Recovering the sense of this whole, understood as greater than the sum of the parts, is the major task of a properly humanistic epistemics: while certainlybased on a full analytical control of the data, knowledge must strive towards an appropriation of the whole as such. A new structural approach to writing and reading websites is a step in this direction: it is based on the integration of parallel and concurrent planes, dynamically articulated within the digital medium in ways that offer a quantum leap over the spoken or the printed medium. As a result, the fragments are seen as “discoursing” with each other and with the whole within which they exist. Archaeology is seen as a privileged locus where this approach can be tested: an excavation presents us with a universe of disaggregated data, which reflect an original whole within which they had meaning. Digital discourse is thus eminently suited for recovering, through archaeological reason, the nature of this whole and thus assessing the impact it can have, humanistically, on us today. Dall’automazione alla svolta computazionale nelle scienze umanistiche digital Dall’automazione alla svolta computazionale nelle scienze umanistiche
Anno: 2024
Abstract: By relying on excerpts from papers of one of the pioneers of Linguistic Computing, the Jesuit father Roberto Busa, this article discusses the impact of automation of linguistic processing on the Humanities. Particularly, the article focusses on the inevitable computational turn that such impact has implied in the Humanities, by presenting a set of best practices in automatic processing of linguistic data, as well as in managing and distributing the empirical results of research projects in the Humanities, for purposes of repeatability. Finally, the article discusses the difference between Digital Humanities, as a research approach supported by technology, and Computational Humanities, as a deep methodological turn in the field. Fenomenologia, ermeneutica e digitalizzazione digital Fenomenologia, ermeneutica e digitalizzazione
Anno: 2024
Abstract: The essay discusses, first, the relation between phenomenology, hermeneutics and transcendental philosophy, offering both a brief historical overview of the development of these disciplines and explaining the differences and overlap between them. Second, it explains the basic ideas of my book Kritik der verstehenden Vernunft of 2018. Third, it assesses on their basis the chances and dangers of digitization for the humanities. Technology, Social Normativity and the Public Sphere in Herder’s Philosophy of History and in the Age of Digitization digital Technology, Social Normativity and the Public Sphere in Herder’s Philosophy of History and in the Age of Digitization
Anno: 2024
Abstract: Herder’s critical engagement with Bacon in This Too a Philosophy of History for the Formation of Humanity (1774) describes a basic constellation of modern technological civilization that still shapes our times. Technological progress plays a crucial role in the self-perpetuating momentum of the global “system of trade” (Herder) that was established by the Western colonial powers. This process promoted, on the one hand, the formation of universal norms by the Enlightenment, on the other hand, these norms still function as an ideological legitimation basis of policies of economic and military power. Herder appeals to his contemporaries to get control of the self-perpetuating momentum of modern Western civilization that has a self-destructive trait. We meet the ambivalence of technological progress described by Herder in digitization, too. Due to the decline of the West’s global dominance, digital capitalism could drive the actual disintegration of Western societies forward to a critical phase. Method and Truth. About the Importance of Being Methodologically Earnest digital Method and Truth - About the Importance of Being Methodologically Earnest
Anno: 2024
Abstract: Against the common notion in hermeneutics, that methods are of minor importance for scholarly research, I argue here in favour of the importance of methods in the humanities. First, I show that even before the invention of the computer, there was already a small scholarly tradition of method-driven approaches. Then I review recent examples of research, which make extensively use of computational methods and their methodology of modelling research questions. By a series of these examples taken from different fields of the humanities I show how specifically computational approaches transform the humanities towards a method-driven field of research. Finally, by systematising the results I defend the central role of methods in scholarly research and pledge for method-driven humanities. Keywords:Methods, methodology of the humanities, quantitative approaches, formalisation, modelling, computational approaches DOI: 10.26350/9788834352595_000006

The Impact of Digital Mediums on the Development of Critical Analysis and Empathy in the Reading Brain digital The Impact of Digital Mediums on the Development of Critical Analysis and Empathy in the Reading Brain
Anno: 2024
Abstract:In this presentation I will briefly describe how the reading brain developed over time to include an elaborated circuit of multiple, time-consuming cognitive, linguistic, and affective processes. These processes expand with use and include analogical reasoning, background knowledge, perspective-taking, critical thinking, and the contemplative capacities leading to insight and novel thought. The thrust of recent research in the cognitive neurosciences indicates that digital reading, as opposed to print reading, expands our capacities for the rapid reading of extensive amounts of information, multi-tasking, and accessing vast resources. At the same time, these very advantages of digitization disadvantages the slower, more sophisticated “deep reading” processes, particularly critical analysis, empathy, and reflection. The importance of the deep reading processes for democracy will be discussed, and a biliterate reading brain will be described as one antidote for the next generation of readers. Aristotle’s vision of the three good lives of a society will be invoked to emphasize the need to preserve the contemplative function for humanity. Un sistema inter-planare in atto. Lo Urkesh Global Record digital Un sistema inter-planare in atto - Lo Urkesh Global Record
Anno: 2024
Abstract: An archaeological excavation produces an enormous quantity of fragments which, disaggregated as they are in their emplacement at the moment of discovery, reflect an original whole in which they had sense and meaning. Archaeology is thus an ideal locus where to study the possibility of a digital system that not only constructs useful catalogs but also provides a narrative that develops an argument, aimed at gaining a hermeneutic access to this original whole. The paper illustrates this on the basis of the digital work done on the material from the excavations at Urkesh, one of the earliest cities in history. It serves as a concrete example of how to avoid falling into the trap of an artificial humanism, where the technique controls our approach to data and argument. It also stresses the importance of learning to “write” and “read” a website, which is then seen not just as a container of information, but as an integrated epistemic system that implements the goal of interplanarity, whereby parallel arguments develop within the framework of systemic digital discourse.
