The article focuses on the metaphor of man as «inverted celestial tree» with reference to the value of the subject, according to Plato’s Timaeus. Before introducing this mythical image, Plato has stated his aim of dealing with the nature and structure of the soul «without precision». A semantic analysis of the lexicon concerning plants and roots related to man is followed by the examination of some rather problematic passages from Timaeus regarding the nature and existence of the individuum. The roots of the self are planted into the intelligible world, where his identity and eudaimonia are anchored.
