B. Castiglione’s literary production is examined. Both tradition and attribution of his lyrics are
discussed, particularly the case of two-handed texts: the eclogue Tirsi, written in 1508 in cooperation
with his cousin Cesare Gonzaga, and the Epistle addressed to Pope Leo X by Castiglione and
his friend Raphael (1519). About The Book of the Courtier, three different matters are presented: the
chronological and thematic link between the genesis of the Book and the Epistle De Guidubaldo
Urbini Duce to King Henry VII (1508); the linguistic review of The Courtier overhauled by G.F.
Valier, before printing; and eventually two problems of interpretation, that is (i) identification of
reliable sources and (ii) restoration of the cultural context.
Trento purtroppo ne era in quel momento sprovvista.
Malatesta Porta (Rimini 1561-1629) hold a role of importance in the dispute on the epic poetry, risen
among supporters of Ariosto and Tasso, with a dialogue, Il Rossi, and some annotations on the
Gerusalemme Liberata. In touch with many scholars of his time, he made his contribution to the debate
on the status of the tragic character with his tragedy I Santi Innocenti, published in 1604 and again in
1605, and to be connected with Marino’s Strage de gl’Innocenti. A religious poem, Il Rimino Protetto,
and two letters to Galileo on astronomical matters are also included in his literary production.
The Cistercian monk from Milano, Ilarione Rancati (1594-1663), theologian, jurist, orientalist of the
Roman Curia, is connected with the establishment of the College of studies in Philosophy and
Theology of the Abbey of S. Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome and with the collection of books and
manuscripts which is the original library in Rome of the Cistercian Congregation of “S. Bernardo
in Italia”. All the writings left by Rancati have been searched for in Milan and Rome, in the libraries
Ambrosiana, Nazionale Centrale Vittorio Emanuele II of Rome, Sessoriana of S. Croce in
Gerusalemme of Rome. The manuscripts preserved in the Ambrosiana and described by Filippo
Argelati in the 18th century are listed in the Appendix.
A relic, supposed to be St. Mary’s sash (Sacra Fascia), was brought from the Holy Land to Tortona
in 1237. A report of this travel is preserved in a 15th-Century chronicle, MS Milano, Braid. AF IX
11/1, and in later MSS (Ambr. C 74 inf., Ambr. C 103 inf., Vat. lat. 7924). During the 17th Century
the relic was moved to the Jesuit church of S. Maria in Brera of Milan. La Sacra Fascia di S. Maria
di Brera della Compagnia di Giesu in Milano (1701) is a booklet published by the Jesuits in order
to foster the devotion to it: here the Sacra Fascia is connected with the Infant Jesus’ swaddling clothes,
described in the visions of Veronica da Binasco, a mystic who lived in Milan in the early 16th Century.
After the French Revolution the relic was apparently transferred to the church of S. Marco of Milan.
e specularità all’interno dell’opera.
Inscriptions provide evidence of the evolution of “collective representations of death”.
They express the grief of the living and at the same time allow to remember the life and
qualities of the dead. The literary and artistic aspects of the 18th and 19th century epitaphs
and the topic of memory are to be examined in the context of the Romantic representation
of death, as it is found in works by Foscolo, Goethe, Lessing, Herder and others. In
the early 19th century the rising importance of the modern epigraphy is parallelled by the
debate on the privileged use of Latin or Italian language. Examples from the collection
of epitaphs written by Stefano Antonio Morcelli, Antonio Cesari, Pietro Giordani, Luigi
Muzzi and Giuseppe Manuzzi, and new dissertations on the genre rules for modern
epigraphy are discussed.
Francesco Foucault, Count of Daugnon (1836-1920), author of the book “Italians in Poland from the
IXth to the XVIIth century”, came from a French family settled in Naples after the revolution of
1789, and followed a career as an officer in the Royal Italian navy, until his marriage. He married
Cloe Zanchi, a blind lady from a wealthy Lombard family and moved to Crema, where he lived
until his wife’s death (1916), after which he returned to Naples and spent the last years of his life
there. Foucault’s main interests were history, heraldry and genealogy. In 1877 he founded the “Archivio
Storico Gentilizio” (“Historical Archive of the Gentry”) in Milan, specialized in genealogical studies.
In this field he also published a number of articles and studies in specialized journals and took part
in numerous congresses in Italy and other European countries. The book on Italians in Poland, which
is in two volumes, although devoid of any real scientific value, testifies how much Italy in the XIXth
century sympathized with the Polish cause and remains Foucault’s main work.
On 13th december 2006 a commemoration of Ezio Franceschini was organised by the Università
Cattolica del S. Cuore for the centennial of his birth. Lorenzo Ornaghi, Rector of the University,
