SUMMARY
The proposed passage, which almost translates the entire second chapter of the book – unpublished in Italy – Les croyances collectives (PUF, Paris 2009) analyzes the ways in which the ‘collective beliefs’occur in the contemporary life and religion, in which the author includes magic. Far from appearing still, simple pre-modern residues, not yet removed from the process of modernization, these beliefs derive from the encounter with the cultural matrix of modernity, and its specific transforming forms, of which the author describes and analyzes the main features.
SUMMARY
The relationship between media and magic has been foreseen by Marshall McLuhan more than four decades ago. Media are magic because they are forms of ‘applied knowledge’, allowing to reduce distance in space and time: or, as Mauss put it, to cancel the interval between desire and fulfillment. In a ‘disenchanted world’, media, as extensions of senses, also allow a ‘enhanced sensitivity’ and, in the contemporary post-media condition
– where the boundaries between media themselves, and between media and environment tend to blur – they foster a sense of presence and reality of either the self, the world (as an antidote to the ‘loss of presence’ in the age of risk), the relationships.
SUMMARY
A fully open and free public sphere, with the rational exchange of arguments it is supposed to allow, is considered
to be a pillar of democracy, and represents a central idol of contemporary intellectual and political life, seemingly lying beyond reproach. This paper however proposes a critical approach to such a pillar, discussing not only the historically imperfect implementations of the public sphere, but the ideal of the public sphere itself. Such a critical approach draws on a comparison of the operation of the modern mediated public sphere to magic, and extends its argument situating the problem of media magic within the broader problem of the modern public sphere. In this sense, the study of ‘media magic’ implies tackling the ‘public sphere’ and the entire modern revolutionary tradition of which it is an integral part, addressing the broader horizon of a ‘genealogy
of the public sphere’. This starts by recognising that the modern public sphere is not simply the place for rational arguments, but is also highly theatrical; and that it did not emerge simply due to the discovery of printing and the eventual rise of the press, but was also sparked by the re-birth of comedy.

SUMMARY
Focusing on the Philippino context, and with an Anthropological approach, the paper explores the cultural effects of those technologies that extend communicative processes beyond physical co-presence, such as the mobile phone and the Internet. At the same time, it shows how the peculiar cultural context addressed contributes
to shape the ‘postcorporeal’ communicative practices allowed by new media. In particular, and in a way that may seem unusual to western eyes, the paper describes how ‘postcorporeal’ communication come to include forms of contact with the transcendental (religion) and also with the realms of magic, like in the cases related to communication with the dead.
SUMMARY
Two recent works, which are to be considered between film production and art video, worked on the ability of moving images to reviving and re-enacting the ancient tradition of the Wunderkammer. In fact, both Fiona Tan’s Disorient (Venice Biennale, 2009), and Agnès Varda’s Les plages d’Agnès (2008) show a tendency on the one hand to catalogue and hoard objects and images in a private place, because of their rarity and uniqueness;
on the other hand, they thematize the desire to capture or release their innate magical power, as result of the collector’s personifications and fetishistic impulses. In particular, in Tan’s video, the Wunderkammer becomes a place of accumulation and assemblage, a symbol of the heterogeneity of the objects, the site of attraction toward the unknown and the eccentric; while Varda works more on a projective and memorial tension,
able to model reality subjectivizing it. In this context, both works not only help clarifying the perception of the vital and organic nature of moving images – a nature which is similar to that of the magic elements that they reproduce – rather they also produce a wonder effect, emanating from the items making up the collections.
Following the thread of a discussion on the potential of magic wonderment of Wunderkammern, the essay aims to follow the processes and the shapes adopted by the object as image and by the image as object.
SUMMARY
Magic and virtual worlds can be compared considering both intermediaries for their ontologically hybrid nature. Starting from this analogy, the role of imagination and imaginary is a grounding key of their comprehension,
often forgotten by theoretical reflections, especially for virtual ones. Actually, virtual images, like magic worlds, re-create a place of action where users are involved by a ‘make believe’ operation not only rationally but also emotionally. The reality effect is created by imagination and its ability to mediate between known and unknown, sensible and intelligible. This consideration opens further questions about the nature of the collective imaginary, developed, for example, by users in social web, and the ability to manipulate it or to create through it other stand-alone and countercultural products.
SUMMARY
The psychology of magic plays on the way an audience thinks, anticipating their thoughts, feelings and actions and incorporating these into the magic act itself. The magician Derren Brown is a performer who specialises in the appearance of psychic abilities, such as mind reading. His magic is a mix of showmanship, psychology and conjuring. He anticipates the way an audience thinks about popular psychology, using it as a basis for conjuring and a source of misdirection. An audience with Derren Brown responds to their own understandings and misunderstandings about psychology and magic, such as the power of the mind. Such cultural practices highlight popular psychology as both a rational explanation for human behaviour and the mysteries of the mind. It also suggests that the notion of re-enchantment shifts meaning within the contemporary contexts of popular culture where performer and audience co-produce the sense of wonder that is magical entertainment.
SUMMARY
Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) disseminated a lot of references to the magical dimension in several essays written from the late twenties of the twentieth century. A detailed analysis of one of these texts, Sorcellerie et cinéma (1927), reconstructs the meaning of the connection between magic and the need for re-establishment of poetic language, of which Artaud is a tireless prophet and that cuts across all artistic areas, to which cinema,
theater, poetry were dedicated. The search for an (impossible?) Merger between signifier and signified is transformed in an attempt to retrieve a shamanic relation with the word and the ground from which the word emerges: as a shaman masters a knowledge that allows him to tie that is separate (the human and the divine), Artaud tries to tie what seems necessarily divided, the sign and the pulsating Life. The word must become a gesture in a work increasingly focused on sound and its many possibilities, explored with equal depth by the singer and musician Demetrio Stratos (1945-1979). The voices of Artaud and Stratos, here put together, echo the desire to recreate the original moment in which body and language sign, sound and text had been one thing.
SUMMARY
Starting with an illustration on how spiritualism has represented for modernity, an area of negotiation between scientific thinking, magical thinking and religion, the essay explores a particular variation of spiritualism, the ITC (i.e. the form of spiritualism which provides a technological mediation in the communication with the dead), and more specifically one of its sub-disciplines (the EVP, or registration of so-called «voices of the dead»). The analysis of secondary texts produced by a subculture made up of Italian practitioners of the discipline shows a process of de «modernization» of the magical thinking that incorporates not only technology,
but makes of it a place and instrument of a magic-ritual practice, in Italy, often charged with a strong religious significance. Moreover, the analysis illustrates how new media have become the main platform of the new spiritualism (which ranges from claims of scientific legitimacy and mystical and participatory dimensions
of the magical thinking) for the theoretical development, the circulation of knowledge, the recreation of the magical experiences (listening to «voices of the dead») and maintenance processes of the community.
SUMMARY
This essay moves from a recognition of the role played by subcultures related to magic and occult on the process
of social shaping of the Internet, and then propose a detailed case study on how the network is reshaping the forms of magical knowledge. In particular, the paper addresses the production and sharing practices of the belief system typical of the Otherkin subculture, one of the newest forms of techno-paganism, mainly born and spread on the network. These production practices of shared knowledge appear in fact closely following those typical of the open source community, with repercussions on the form of the magical culture as a whole. The magical subcultures appear so not only to play a role in the processes of development of the latest communication
technologies (one of the main drivers of the modernization process), but they also seem affected by the ongoing general processes of cultural transformation, thus appearing very different from the ‘immobile residual pre-modern’ described by the paradigm of modernization. The study of the relationship between new media and magic is thus a contribution to the attempt, by the social sciences, to deconstruct the ideological representation of Western modernity as a univocal process of systematic rationalization in favor of a more complex view of the transformation processes typical of the Western modernity.
